FACULTY
OF NATURAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES.
The
Faculty of Natural and Social Sciences and Humanities reflects
the great diversity of the present day MTU. It has grown from the School
of Engineering Fundamentals that traditionally provided basic instruction
for all first and second year students.
The main educational goal of the Faculty is to prepare students for
advanced studies in the chosen areas. The Departments listed below currently
contribute to any Degree or Diploma program:

In recent years new educational programmes have been developed.
They are designed to provide full-course instruction within the Faculty.
Five year programmes supervised by the Departments of Mathematics and
Physics allow students to qualify as secondary school teachers. Along
with the development of degree and Diploma courses in Engineering the
MTU is particularly anxious to attract students equally concerned with
humanities and social sciences.
Those students who prefer concentrating on social studies can undertake
full-time courses leading to a Diploma of Sociologist or a Diploma of
Lawyer; one of the options in Jurisprudence courses being International
Marine Legislation The graduates are expected to have job careers far
beyond the engineering sphere.
We are persuaded that modern society has been unduly constricted intellectually
by the tradition that has tended to segregate scientific and humanistic
education. And we will be moving increasingly to the collaborative endeavours
which connect the sciences, engineering and humanities. In the context
of this tendency every student is exposed to a wide range of cultural
and intellectual influences through a great variety of options in the
national and world history, art, philosophy, political and social sciences.
The cycle of political subjects has been totally revised and a one-sided
outlook has been removed. At present political sciences are undertook
as systematic studies of government and political processes. Within
these disciplines students analyse the development, distribution and
uses of political power, the determinants and consequences of various
forms of political behaviour and sources of political conflicts, the
ways in which conflicts are both intensified and resolved and the relationship
between an individual and the state.
The cycles of humanities and languages provide students a general cultural
background and also develop skills necessary for successful practical
activity in profession: creativity, adaptability to new situations,
ability to work in teams, flexibility and affective communications.
The Russian Language Department primarily offers courses for overseas
students including standard and individual programmes taking into account
their initial language preparation and required proficiency.
The Faculty Departments are well provided with teaching facilities and
learning resources including Computer Centre and a net of laboratories,
the Laboratory of Material Sciences known to be one of the best among
educational institutions.
Postgraduate programmes leading to Doctoral degrees are offered
by Departments of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Strength of Materials,
Materials Science, Philosophy, Mechanics, Applied Geometry and Computer-Aided
Drawing.

Dean of the Faculty is professor Uri V.Belkin
