THE
FACULTY OF BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT
The
Faculty of Business and Management was originally designed to
provide professionals in the sphere of financial activities of the state
enterprises with emphasis on the shipbuilding sector. The programmes
reflected the policy of the centralised economy that met the demands
of the society.
Graduates traditionally had employment at Accounting Departments of
shipbuilding plants and research institutions of marine-related industries.
They also moved into prestigious positions in different non-profit and
government enterprises.
Transfer from the central planning to the market economy has deeply
influenced all branches of education but nowhere else the changes are
as radical as in business and management studies.
At present the Faculty understands its educational goals as follows:
The
main educational programme on offer is a Diploma of Economist and Manager
course . Within this general course there are a number of specializations
both concerned and not concerned with shipbuilding industry. For instance,
one of the recently developed courses deals with small business management.
Any programme is now based on new approaches to individual and social
activities related to the choice, production, distribution and consumption
of goods and services. Thus, economics is considered to make its essential
contribution to the understanding of many important social problems:
changes in efficiency and productivity, fluctuations in the overall
employment, inflation, the effect of government deficits, the growth
and decline of industries and so on. Management is aimed to provide
the making decisions conceptions and practical tools within the wide
framework of business strategies and objectives.
Any Faculty curriculum encompasses cycles of humanities and social sciences
that provide a sufficient background to understand the evolution and
development of the society. This cycle includes subjects in the world
and national history, culture, art, political studies, foreign languages.
A wide range of options is also available.
An integral part of the curricula is a cycle of engineering fundamentals.
Students are taught to solve the problems of economics and management
with quantitative rigor and precision and also with the awareness of
the main design principles and production technologies. They are expected
to have profound knowledge and practical skills in computation, mathematical
statistics, the probability theory, information technologies and also
be familiar with modern methods of collecting and structuring large
quantities of data.
The central core of the programme includes: principles of macroeconomics
and microeconomics, theories of economic development, marketing, international
business, computer simulation and mathematical modelling.
Further subject sequences provide professional instruction with concentration
on one of the designated areas. They include: Finance and Accounting,
Labour and Public Finances, Stock Exchange and Banking, Price Systems
and Central Planning, Supply and Demand Analyses, Taxation, Economic
Measurement and Estimation, Technology Management, Operations Management,
Industrial Relations, Production Management, Managerial Psychology,
Business Economics, Small Enterprises, Law and Business, Business and
Environment.
Any course provides a strong preparation for postgraduate studies while
at the same time securing an advantageous market position for students
seeking employment directly upon graduation. Career prospects cover
the spheres of business administration and finance, industrial relations
and government.
